The Oscar Nominees Reconsidering the FBI
The FBI looms large over the American imagination, especially in film—and particularly in a handful of newly-anointed Oscar nominees, as Cassie da Costa points out in HWD today. Judas and the Black Messiah, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 all “cast the FBI in a less flattering light, particularly when it comes to its history of censoring and harassing Black public figures,” she writes. “Yet these films, which were produced within the Hollywood system, do much to individualize the nature of their dissent.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Anya Taylor-Joy graces V.F.’s latest cover; our fashion team reveals where to find the lookssported by the Queen’s Gambit star in her cover story; Chris Murphy bids farewell to Claudia Conway, erstwhile American Idol contestant; and Ellen weathers a ratings slide in the wake of workplace scandal.
