Tina Turner Says Her Piece
A lot of recent music documentaries aren’t narrative films so much as “music catalogs in search of a story,” according to director Dan Lindsay. But that’s not true of Lindsay and T.J. Martin’s Tina, a thorough examination of Tina Turner’s extraordinary life that doubles as metacommentary on the stories we tell about Tina Turner. Lindsay and Martin spoke with Jordan Hoffman about carefully walking that line: “Our process with sensitive material is always to ask if we are being provocative for provocative’s sake,” said Martin, “or are we navigating someone’s personal trauma with respect?”
Elsewhere in HWD, we bid farewell to The Goldbergs star George Segal; V.F. cover star Anya Taylor-Joy’s hairstylist explains the best way to care for platinum tresses; Anthony Breznican updates us on Disney’s ever-shifting release schedule; and Kenzie Bryant considers Orlando Bloom.
