Reintroducing Kelly Marie Tran

“In 2015,” Joanna Robinson writes, “a largely unknown Kelly Marie Tran scored what should have been a dream role”: a leading part in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Soon, though, her fairy tale turned into a nightmare, as a vocal contingent of Star Wars fans chased her off social media. This week Tran returns to the public eye as the title character in Raya and the Last Dragon. Voicing the plucky princess was an empowering experience, she tells Robinson: “Like, it’s just giving a woman permission to feel what she’s feeling. Like, I can’t believe it’s 2021 and I’m saying that, but yeah.”
