The royal family is notoriously private and posh, so you’d be forgiven for assuming their spare time is spent meandering around castles and polishing their crowns. But we’ve recently gotten some very human insights into King Charles III, who revealed that he likes to get his groove on just as much as the rest of us commoners.
In a special Apple Music show called The King’s Music Room, which aired Monday, Charles walked the audience through some of his favorite songs, which he said was an “interesting and innovative” way to celebrate Commonwealth Day. And we’re surprised to report that the king’s got broader taste than we expected.
Charles said the songs “originated from across the Commonwealth family and other parts of the world,” and they make for quite the collection. Among the most surprising inclusions is Beyoncé, whom he called “so exceptional” that he “just could not resist including her music.” After congratulating Queen Bey on her long-overdue Grammy win for Album of the Year, he blessed listeners with her 2003 hit “Crazy in Love.”
Having a hard time picturing the king getting down like nobody’s business? Well, it seems dancing that is something he loves a surprising amount: He described Kylie Minogue’s 1987 cover of “The Loco-Motion” as having “infectious energy” that makes it “incredibly hard to sit still.” Then he closed out his set with 1980’s “Upside Down” by icon Diana Ross.
“It was absolutely impossible not to get up and dance when [“Upside Down”] was played,” the king said of his younger days. “I wonder if I can still just manage it.”
Wondering what else you might hear on the royal speakers? Read on for the full list of every song King Charles included in his collection.
