Everyone’s a Winner |
It is undeniably an honor just to be nominated for an Oscar, but it probably doesn’t always feel that way. On Oscar night there are people who get to stand onstage with their gold statuettes, and then there’s everybody else, no matter how happy they may be for the winners. |
But in this period of awards season—with the nominations announced and final voting just one frantic week away—everyone really does get to feel like a winner. At both the Directors Guild of America Awards last Saturday night and the Oscar nominees luncheon on Monday, the nominees were celebrated right alongside the eventual winners. Christopher Nolan may have been the eventual DGA winner, but the speeches from Greta Gerwig and Yorgos Lanthimos had the room rapt. And at the Academy luncheon, every single nominee, from a live-action-short director to Martin Scorsese gets their name read exactly once as they take the stage for the annual class photo. What could be a more democratic celebration than that?
