Welcome Back to The O.C. |
The third season of The O.C. was marred by creative mistakes and backstage drama—the very public restlessness of its main cast members, the strangely quick resolution of season two’s big cliff-hanger, basically everything having to do with poor, doomed surfer Johnny. All that converged in the season’s final episode, “The Graduates,” in which Mischa Barton’s Marissa was killed in a car accident. Barton was the initial face of the hit show, but she never entirely seemed at home on it in the way so many of her costars—not coincidentally, all of them older than her—had been. In their new oral history of the hit series, writer Alan Sepinwall and The O.C. executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage dig into just how badly the show botched Barton’s exit—and the actor explains why even she was shocked to see the way Marissa’s story ended. |
