Yarrr!

One of the spring TV season’s most delightful surprise stories is the saga of Our Flag Means Death, a gay pirate romance from the mind of Taika Waititi. After a tense waiting period—tense for the HBO Max show’s compact but incredibly passionate fan base—the series was recently renewed for a second season. This week, Waititi comes onto V.F.’s Little Gold Men podcast to discuss what to expect when the show returns, as well as a host of other projects—including this summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder—with Katey Rich. “It’s an interesting world of pirates and vagabonds and people without any rules,” he says of Our Flag. “And of course it makes perfect sense that they had no rules around sex.”

Elsewhere in HWD, Richard Lawson reviews Disney/Pixar’s latest big-screen release, Lightyear; David Canfield takes a closer look at the strange possibilities of this year’s Emmy ballot; Maggie Coughlan recounts a conversation with Kim Kardashian; and Rebecca Ford lets us know which icons will receive honorary Oscars from the Academy this fall.
