Pearl Jam Hit With Cover Of '60s Song
1999
Pearl Jam score their biggest Hot 100 hit when "Last Kiss," a cover of a song from the '60s, reaches #2, held off the top spot by Jennifer Lopez' first single, "If You Had My Love."
"Last Kiss" was originally released by J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers in 1964. When Eddie Vedder discovered the song, he introduced it to the band, which added it to their setlist in 1998. At a soundcheck, they recorded the song, which was distributed to fan club members. Radio stations got a hold of it and started playing the track, goosing Pearl Jam into releasing it as a single.
