“This Is Carol Burnett”
As the legendary Wayne Gretzky—and, later, the somewhat less legendary Michael Scott, of Dunder Mifflin—once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” We’ve got those words in mind this morning, as we share Olivia Freeman’s poignant, revealing Q&A with Carol Burnett. Freeman is a 17-year-old high school student in Seattle who idolizes Burnett, thanks to her parents introducing her to the great comic’s work. She found contact info for Burnett, left her a message asking for an interview for a club she had confounded—and one day, Burnett called back. Today, with Burnett about to appear on the last season of Better Call Saul, Vanity Fairshares the lovely conversation, with both Freeman’s and the comedian’s blessing. Burnett talks inspirations, challenges, and pivotal moments, and shares advice we could all benefit from: “Be open to all of your ideas and don’t think you can’t do something because nobody’s ever done it before.… Take singing lessons. Take dancing if you can, all of those things. Try out for everything. You’re 17. I didn’t know what I was going to do until I was 19.”
Elsewhere in Hollywood, the first round of Emmy voting ends today, so we talk to Lily James and Sebastian Stan of Pam & Tommy about the lengths they went to embody the iconic former couple; and Denée Benton brings us back to The Gilded Age. If you've got movies on your mind, we heartily suggest this interview with Jenny Slate about her charming, and surprisingly moving, new movie, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.
