ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY AND AWARD NEWS

MARCH 15, 2021

Oscar! Oscar! Oscar!

Months after the Academy formally announced that it was delaying the 93rd annual Academy Awards due to the pandemic, the 2021 Oscar nominations are finally here. We made our best guesses prior to the announcement—but even the sharpest were surprised by some of the films that wound up scoring big Monday morning. For instance: after missing out on several precursor awards, Mank wound up as the film with the most nominations overall, securing 10 nods including best picture, actor, and director. But it has stiff competition in the form of Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Minari, Sound of Metal, The Father, and Judas and the Black Messiah, all of which earned six nominations themselves.

Elsewhere in HWD, Anthony Breznican charts the biggest surprises and snubs from the nominations; Yohana Destapoints out that for the first time in history, two women have been nominated for best director; Chris Feil handicaps Glenn Close’s chances of winning best supporting actress for a role that also earned her a Razzie nomination this year; and because awards season is bountifulKatey Rich also details which musicians went home with Grammys Sunday night.
