Tom Hanks, Pandemic Patron Saint
Just about a year ago, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson revealed that they had contracted the coronavirus—and just like that, for swaths of the American people, a pandemic that had seemed theoretical suddenly became very, very real. Today, Katey Rich remembers how Hanks became the avatar of our COVID-stricken year. “It would have been hard to engineer a more accessible, relatable celebrity coming down with the virus early and making everyone pay attention,” she writes. “It wasn’t logical, but it felt true—if Tom Hanks could get it, anyone could.”
