An Oscar First—Potentially

In the ceremony’s 93-year history, there’s never been a best-picture contender at the Oscars whose entire team of nominated producers are Black. But as Anthony Breznicanpoints out in HWD today, Judas and the Black Messiah might change that, thanks to producers Charles D. King, Ryan Coogler, and Shaka King. “I can’t pretend to be surprised,” Judas costar Dominique Fishback tells him. “We’re talking about [recognition] for a film about a 21-year-old man who was assassinated because he wanted to unify all people, and because he loved the people. I can’t pretend to be like, ‘Wow, this is the first time?’”

Elsewhere in HWD, HBO Max accidentally unleashes the Snyder cut early; Oprah Winfrey draws huge ratings for her sit-down with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle; the V.F.fashion team unpacks the best looks from the 2021 Critics Choice Awards; and we hit the one-year anniversary of the week that television production shut down due to COVID, which Joy Press recounted in the pages of V.F. last year.
