The week-plus-long Cannes Film Festival can take some time to get going, moving at a leisurely, French Riviera–ready pace. Not so this year: I’ve already caught up with multiple Oscar nominees wandering the Croisette, cohosted a packed luncheon at the Carlton Beach Club, and watched Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Strong discuss Donald Trump and his equal parts vague and alarming idea for a tariff on movies produced internationally. Day one affirmed what we already suspected: This will be one of the buzziest Cannes in years.
Movies headlined by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Tom Cruise, and more are set to premiere over the next few days. Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Kelly Reichardt, Richard Linklater, and others are duking it out for the coveted Palme d’Or. I’m on the ground covering it all, alongside Vanity Fair’s chief critic, Richard Lawson—keep reading our live blog, which will be running through the whole festival, and we promise you won’t miss a thing.
