Back to The Staircase
Few true-crime cases have been told and retold as often in the media as the saga of Kathleen and Michael Peterson. Still, there’s much to admire in The Staircase, a new HBO Max series that fictionalizes the story of Kathleen’s mysterious death, writes Richard Lawson. The show, starring Toni Collette and Colin Firth as the central couple and created by Antonio Campos, is “a peculiar and probing and damning piece of work that is about the Peterson family,” Lawson says. “But also, I suspect after watching five episodes, about all of us too.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Savannah Walsh details the onstage attack that derailed a Dave Chappelle show at the Hollywood Bowl Tuesday night; Anthony Breznican celebrates May the 4th with a tantalizing bit of Star Wars backstory; Chris Murphychats with Matt Rogers, a comedian who can be found pretty much everywhere this spring; and Stephen Colbert rails against the leaked Supreme Court draft indicating an end for Roe v. Wade.
