ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway ends, marking a turning point in the conflict between the United States and Japan during World War II. The four-day battle, which was fought about 1,000 miles northwest of Hawaii, resulted in the Japanese losing four aircraft carriers, while the U.S. lost one. Furthermore, the Japanese lost a cruiser, 292 aircraft and suffered 2,500 casualties. The U.S. lost the carrier Yorktown , a destroyer, 145 aircraft and suffered 307 casualties. One of the keys to victory was that the U.S. was able to break the Japanese codes, which allowed them to anticipate what would have been a surprise attack. The Japanese Navy never recovered from the losses, and in August of 1942, the U.S. began a counteroffensive at Guadalcanal. |
