On June 28, 1939, Pan American (Pan Am) launches the first transatlantic passenger service between New York and Marseilles, France. The plane used for the service was the B-314 “Yankee Clipper” seaplane the largest plane ever built until the Boeing 747 flew three decades later. The double-decker plane could hold 74 passengers and had a range of 3,500 miles. The accommodations were first class, and the seats could be converted to beds, as the flights took as long as 29 hours. The cost of a one-way trip was $375. Pan Am launched passenger service between New York and Southampton, England on July 8, 1939. |
