The Coolest Mother on Big Little Lies
Yes, much of the chatter about Big Little Lies season two has been firmly focused on the incomparable Meryl Streep. But there’s another new character on the show this year who’s every bit as intriguing: Elizabeth, Bonnie’s New Age-y yet grounded mother. She’s the sort of woman who both travels with crystals and bluntly questions why her daughter has moved to a town where she seems to be the only black person in sight—a strong woman brought to life by a strong actress, Crystal Fox.Yohana Desta spoke to Fox about moving to Monterey, and about the actor’s own fascinating past and family. She and costar Zoë Kravitz bonded quickly, said Fox, ”because I was trying to read up a little bit more about her, and I read an article [where] she had mentioned Tyler Perry, who I am working with currently, and that she liked Nina Simone. Nina Simone is my aunt—so I figured, Oh my goodness, she’s into music, so I can bond with her over that. And we did.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Kevin Fitzpatrick wonders if an underperforming Toy Story 4 is the latest victim of summer sequelitis; Fiona Shaw opens up about her devilish Killing Eve character, as nomination-round Emmy voting draws to a close; Laura Bradley updates us on the ever-troubled Academy Museum; and the Little Gold Menteam discusses how Chernobyl became a sleeper Emmy favorite.
