Story: Flying Northwest Airlines B747-400 With 1 Winglet Missing

The story is shared by reader Peter van den Berg

On 23rd July 2000 I was flying NW0049 from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Detroit. My first ever flight, with an onward connection to Boston Logan Airport. Not the most direct route available, but I had to pay for the ticket myself and this reroute saved me a lot of money; which was of the utmost importance at the time, as I was only 18 years old and funds were tight. Besides, as an Avgeek and plane spotter what’s better than time spent in the air? NWA was operating a Boeing 747-400 for the leg to Detroit.

Flying Volga-Dnepr IL-76 to Antarctica

The below story is contributed by reader Stas Skripnikov. Video: Flying Qatar Executive Gulfstream G650ER at 50,000 feet

After viewing the new experimental Gulfstream G700, I was invited to a flight onboard Qatar Executive Gulfstream G650ER. Qatar Executive is the private jet division of Qatar Airways.

There were a few surprises apart from the usual luxury onboard a private jet. The G650ER cabin was extremely quiet, much quieter than any commercial airliner. The pilot drew the letter "QE" in the sky over Doha at 15,000 ft.

After lunch, the G650ER climbed to 50,000 ft which is a higher cruising altitude than all of the commercial airliners. It was a personal high for me! (since Supersonic Concorde at 58,000 ft).

The Gulfstream G650ER flight not only showed the luxury and privacy of business aviation but also the aircraft's performance. The G650ER was able to fly faster, higher, and quieter.

Video: Meet the World’s New Record Breaking Gulfstream G700

I was invited to an exclusive viewing event of Gulfstream's new flagship, the Gulfstream G700 in Doha, Qatar.

Gulfstream introduced the G700 as the industry’s new flagship aircraft. It boasts business aviation’s most spacious cabin and can fly farther, and faster, than any other competitor in the business-jet industry. Equipped with the all-new Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines, and an advanced high-speed wing design, the G700 is able to fly at a record-breaking speed (Mach .925) and range with outstanding efficiency.

The G700 cockpit features the award-winning Symmetry Flight Deck, with active control sidesticks. The cockpit has done away with most buttons and replaced them with a clean touchscreen design on all panels.

Qatar Executive, the private jet arm of Qatar Airways is the launch customer of G700. The executive charter service provider has ordered 10 of the world’s largest business jets, taking delivery of the very first aircraft off the Gulfstream assembly line in Georgia, US in 2022.
