All About the Emmys
The 2021 Emmy Awards were sometimes an odd affair, from Seth Rogen’s jokey opening remarks—which seemed to contain at last a grain of truth about the anxiety he felt attending an event that seemed less COVID-safe than he had been promised—to whatever Conan O’Brien was doing during Television Academy chief Frank Scherma’s speech. Even stranger, as Sonia Saraiya points out, the show was largely marred by “the cognitive dissonance between championing diversity and being unable to actually showcase it”—with an all-white slate of acting winners and Michaela Coel and RuPaul the only non-white major victors. “Instead of being moments that knit the industry together,” she writes, “I felt I was being shown how hard it is to overcome the entrenched barriers in Hollywood.”
Elsewhere in HWD, V.F. brings you the best-dressed stars on the Emmys red carpet; Yohana Desta celebrates Coel’s hard-won victory; Savannah Walsh explores one of the night’s most surprising snubs—the lack of awards for Wandavson; and Chris Murphy salutes O‘Brien, who brought some much-needed WTF to the ceremony.
