“Thank You, God and Norm Macdonald”

The comedy world was shaken Tuesday after word broke that Norm Macdonald—best known for a particularly beloved run as SNL’s Weekend Update host—had died at the age of 61. Tributes immediately began pouring in as fans and compatriots remembered his unique deadpan style and thrilling ability to go off script, as in an indelible 1997 appearance on Conan O’Brien’s Late Night. Donald Liebenson spoke with that night’s other guest, actor Courtney Thorne-Smith, about the joy she took in watching her movie get roasted by Macdonald. “What happened wasn’t normal, but it was delightful,” she told him. “That was my favorite talk show appearance by far.”
