The Autumn of Jessica Chastain Begins
One decade ago, Jessica Chastain—a Juilliard grad who had been working steadily—suddenly became a major movie star, thanks to a twist of fate that saw six films featuring her all debut during the same 12-month span. Chastain’s 2021 isn’t quite as busy as her 2011—but as Richard Lawson points out, she does once more have a glut of projects all premiering around the same time, a haul that underscores her talent and versatility. The most awards-friendly of them is probably The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which Chastain also produced. “She’s a thrill to watch,” he writes, “and I hope Chastain doesn’t have to wait another 10 years until she can do something this grand and captivating again.”
Elsewhere in HWD, a notorious love triangle begins in the fifth episode of Love Is a Crime, our new podcast; Lawson reviews Kenneth Branagh’s film memoir, Belfast; Yohana Destatakes stock of Denzel Washington’s film catalog; and David Canfield explores the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys.
