Your Complete Guide to Sunday’s Emmy Awards
For most of the shows expected to triumph at Sunday’s Emmys, this moment has been a year—if not more—in the making.
The Queen’s Gambit premiered to acclaim and record numbers for Netflix about 11 months ago. A few weeks later, The Crown debuted its delicious fourth season on the streamer to more attention than ever before. And while Ted Lasso is currently airing its second season, the series—which premiered in August 2020—is up for its first-ever Emmys this Sunday, more than a year after its freshman launch. All three shows have won Golden Globes, critics awards, and industry-guild prizes; in an era where we can’t seem to focus on the same thing for more than a few days, it’s genuinely remarkable that all three have maintained their front-runner status for so long, as so many other buzzy hits have come and gone.
Or at least, it is to me. I’m David Canfield, and with my colleague Rebecca Ford, I’ve been covering this strange Emmy season pretty much nonstop for the last several months. Awards Insider tracked the top races’ many twists and turns, got the inside scoop—that good ol’ Hollywood gossip—from studios and streamers on how their contenders were lining up, and advocated for the programs that deserved more of a shot at TV’s top awards than they probably had. It’s been a journey.
And so it feels slightly disappointing—if maybe oddly satisfying too—that we find ourselves at the very beginning of where we started. Back in June, to kick off the season, I wrote that Ted Lasso, The Crown, and The Queen’s Gambit were way out front for the top comedy, drama, and limited-series Emmys, respectively. This feels truer than ever today, two days before the big ceremony.
Beyond this cloud of inevitability, is there anything left to watch for? Why yes, dear reader, I’m glad you asked—plenty. In a handy guide, Awards Insider has compiled the many story lines to watch out for during Sunday’s in-person, socially distanced, hopefully engaging broadcast, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. Who’s going to triumph in that limited-series-actress bloodbath? Does that Ted Lasso backlash mean anything for its chances? And will we get any surprises? (As avid awards watchers, we can’t help but hope so.)
We’ll be everywhere Sunday with analysis of the winners as they come in, as well as some reflections on why it all went down the way it did, so watch this space. And thanks for going on the ride with us. Take a deep breath too, because next week our relentless, six-month-long Oscar season coverage begins! (Okay, as if we haven’t started already...)
