November meetings
The CIRCOM meetings that usually take place in May – Executive Committee, European Board, Annual Assembly and Annual Conference - were not held because of the COVID-19 situation. The Annual Assembly was postponed and held online on 20 November, after regular meetings of the Executive Committee and European Board were held online, too.
The coronavirus crisis still does not allow us to continue with our normal activities in 2021. Based on experience gained in 2020, various options were explored on how to go on in such an environment of uncertainties. Of course, the preferred option is doing everything in the real world. However, as getting back to normal may take some time and will not be quite possible in the first months of 2021, we discussed the possibilities to keep on working by using digital platforms.
We continue to attract new members: TV100, the Municipal Television of Thessaloniki, Greece, is a CIRCOM Regional Member as of 1 January 2021.
The Annual Assembly elected Jyri Kataja-Rahko, Yle, Finland the President of CIRCOM Regional, to head the organisation in his third consecutive term. We congratulate him and support him in leading CIRCOM Regional in these difficult and sometimes unpredictable times!
Upon the recommendation of the Executive Committee, the Annual Assembly elected Tone Kunst, Norway, as Individual Member of the European Board and extended the term of Individual member of the European Board for Johan Liden, SVT, Sweden. We congratulate them and welcome their expertise!
Prix CIRCOM 2021 - New Entry Date, New Competition
We are moving the entry date for the Prix CIRCOM 2021to January 2021because of the latest developments of the coronavirus crisis.
After the unusually busy and difficult weeks of autumn 2020, we are looking forward to spring of 2021 – and spring has been the time when Europe’s regional televisions take up the gauntlet and enter their best productions for the prestigious Prix CIRCOM competition!

David Lowen, President of the Prix, explains:
“We have the same line-up of categories – Documentary (sponsored by RTÉ Ireland), Europe (BNT Bulgaria), Entertainment and Drama (TPA and TVG Spain), Investigative Journalism (Council of Europe), Minorities in Society (FTV France), Most Original and Innovative (NRK Norway), Music and Arts (TG4 Ireland), News Programme (RPO The Netherlands), News Report (SVT Sweden), Video Journalism (BBC UK), Young Onscreen Talent (TVR Romania) and the Grand Prix itself (TVP Poland) - so entrants know what is required and the criteria is changed very little. With so many stories about experiences with Covid, it should be a fascinating year for all content from news coverage to drama creativity.”
Training
By the end of November Reaching young audience with the news – a 3-day online training was hosted by Guillaume Kuster, with Kulwant Sohal, BBC and Johannes Kardell, SVT.
At the beginning of December CIRCOM held a workshop on Climate action and Citizens. It was hosted by the European Committee of the Regions at its EuroPCom multiregional online event and directed by CIRCOM's Media Expert Guillaume Kuster.
The training programme ended the year on a high note regardless of the difficulties and the need to constantly adapt to meet various challenges and deliver in the best possible way. This allowed us also to look ahead and make plans for 2021.
For the second week of March (8 March 2021) the Training group proposes to run Journalism in a pandemic, surviving and thriving in the “New Normal”, a week of training sessions and discussions to reflect and share experiences and learning from these extraordinary times. It will be a week of entirely on-line content aiming at two sessions a day - practical training in the morning and group discussions in the afternoon, lasting between 1 hour and 1.5 hour each.
Season Greetings
The holiday season is in full swing. 2020 was a dynamic year full of surprises. We are looking forward to 2021 - it may be unpredictable, but we meet the challenge and do it our way and succeed. Now is time to celebrate!
