Tom Hanks Goes West
Truth is the weapon of choice for Tom Hanks’s character in the upcoming News of the World, which Anthony Breznicanpreviews in HWD today. The film, a 19th-century-set Western, has a special resonance today: “Even though it’s set then, it’s a film about our times,” director Paul Greengrass tells Breznican. “Neighbors and families and communities were in stark and often violent conflict with each other, and Americans needed to decide who they were as Americans.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Julie Miller chats with Julie Taymorabout her unconventional Gloria Steinem biopic, The Glorias;Joanna Robinson dissects a disappointing SNL season premiere; Christopher Rosen eulogizes the dearly departedsitcom GLOW; and Breznican has bad news for anyone hankering to see Timothée Chalamet battle sandworms in outer space.
