- What we know: The stampede happened at a crowded religious event yesterday. Most of the 116 victims were women and children. It was India’s deadliest stampede in over a decade.
- What caused the incident? It appears to have been a combination of heat and religious fervor. The crush occurred when the Hindu preacher was leaving, witnesses said.
