On4 September 925, Athelstan was crowned King of the Anglo-Saxons in Kingston-upon-Thames, London.Two years later he conquered the last Viking kingdom of York, bringing the domains of the English under one king for the first time in history.
On25 September 1066, Harold Godwinson & Harald Hardrada faced off at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in a bid to win the English throne. Hardrada was killed in the battle & of his 300 longboats only 24 were needed to carry the survivors back to Norway.
