The Thorny Case of Renee Bach

The new HBO docuseries Savior Complex is about Renee Bach, a white evangelical missionary with no medical background who founded a medical nonprofit for children in Uganda, then left the country as questions were raised about children who died while in her center’s care. Naturally, the conversation around the case—and the doc itself—has been heated. “I think that some of the complaints will go away after they see the series,” director Jackie Jesko tells Eve Batey.That said, some viewers “will probably have things they’re unhappy with, and you can’t please everyone all the time.”  Elsewhere in HWD, Sam Levinson opens up about late Euphoria star Angus Cloud; Rebecca Ford enters the Twin Flames Universe; Kerry Washington previews her new memoir; and David Canfield chats with Oscar hopeful Trace Lysette.
