The Truth About the Sex Pistols

Danny Boyle had a simple rule when trying to figure out which of the people depicted in his new FX series, Pistol, have told the truth when describing the history of the Sex Pistols and the nascent punk scene. “If they all agreed, everybody would go, ‘Well, clearly that’s not right—that can’t be true!’” the Oscar winner tells Alan Light in a candid conversation about how the show itself sometimes bent reality—whatever “reality” means—in service of emotional truth. “What we tried to convey was how the Pistols smashed through everything, all limitations,” he says. “Everybody thought they were Satan. But they weren’t—they were free, in all its goodness and ugliness and wonder.”
