The Great Emmy Glut Is Here

Have an idea of who you want to vote for come Emmy time? Well, too bad—you’re hardly ready to cast a ballot yet. Quite literally dozens of contending shows have yet to premiere, with all of their launch dates slated for within the next month or so, ahead of the May 31 eligibility cutoff. Naturally, it’s some of the starriest, buzziest stuff of the season, debuting within days (or hours!) of each other. If you thought the Oscar-season glut was bad…

I’m David Canfield, and over here at Awards Insider, it’s been pure screening madness as my colleagues and I attempt to do the (genuinely) impossible and get ahead of all this content.Inevitably, some—many?—of the series, backed with pricey FYC budgets and the result of years of development, will get lost in the shuffle; how can viewers—Television Academy members included—be expected to keep up with so many dark, lengthy series at the same time? But as shows like Hacks and Mare of Easttown reminded us just last year, being fresh on the scene can make a campaign too—if you’re good enough to stand out.

This weekend, well-received new seasons of past comedy-series nominees The Flight Attendant and Barry hit HBO Max, while an array of new limited series with high ambitions drop elsewhere. We’ve got you covered on a number of them: I spoke with the showrunner behind Gaslit, starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn and tackling the Watergate scandal, premiering Sunday on Starz. My colleague Julie Miller, meanwhile, went deep with Emmy winner Claire Foy about her rich new turn in Amazon Prime Video’s A Very British Scandal, which launched today. There’s also Showtime’s The Man Who Fell From Earth, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, and David Simon’s next HBO police drama, We Own This City, dropping over the next few days, bolstered by solid reviews.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Dustin Lance Black got personal in our interview for his buzzy new project, FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven (streaming on Hulu), centering on Andrew Garfield as a conflicted Mormon detective. (If any spring limited series can hit that Mare sweet spot, right now I’d bet on this one.) And Paramount+ is making its biggest push for gold yet with The Offer, about the making of The Godfather, which my colleague Anthony Breznican can get you caught up on. Both start streaming on Thursday—the day before Netflix releases the final episodes of Ozark, and AppleTV+ unleashes its Elisabeth Moss mystery vehicle Shining Girls.Seriously, it doesn’t end!

There’s no way you’ll be able to watch it all. As much as humanly possible, we’ll be sorting through it all for you, right here.
