Russian Doll Goes Underground |
Back to the Future had the DeLorean. Doctor Who has the TARDIS. Hot Tub Time Machine had, well…you know. The second season of Netflix’s Russian Doll also employs an unorthodox time-travel device: the New York City subway system, specifically the 6 train. “I do know a lot more about subway trains than I ever thought I would or needed to,” the show’s production designer, Diane Lederman, tells Savannah Walsh, explaining how her team brought rented subway cars back to the past and filmed select scenes in real stations. “You have to walk the subway tracks, and learn how to get out of the way with live trains running by you…it’s a little unnerving.” |
