Wolfwalkers Adds Some Color to the Oscars
Wolfwalkers, the Apple TV+ release nominated for best animated feature at this month’s Academy Awards, is taking a creative approach to its Oscar campaign. As Anthony Breznican reports, it’s teaching kids and grown-ups alike how to draw its mosaic-like characters—and promoting its old-fashioned, hand-drawn approach to animation in the process. The genre has for decades been moving away from this sort of cartooning: “By the ’80s, you were starting to see this tendency toward cleaning everything up, making everything kind of perfect,” producer, writer, and director Tomm Mooretold Breznican. “Whereas some of the older stuff just felt like sketchy drawings, and it was something really magical about that.”
