A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OUR PARTNER
In a riveting and lively conversation about Black history and politics in America, esteemed Congresswoman Karen Bass of California sits down with Director/Writer/Producer Shaka King and writers Will Berson and Keith & Kenny Lucas to discuss their Oscar-nominated film, JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH. The group delves into the brief but extraordinary life of Chairman Fred Hampton and his lasting impact on the Civil Rights movement, his legacy as an organizer of multi ethnic communities and his untimely death at the hands of the FBI’s COINTEL program.
Filmmaker Shaka King, Daniel Kaluuya, and more discuss the scene in which Chairman Fred Hampton, just out of prison, gives an emotionally rousing speech, and the power of Hampton's revolutionary message plays out over the faces of his pregnant fiancée, an FBI handler, and the Judas who will betray him.
Nominated for the Oscar for “Best Original Song,” recording artist H.E.R.’s “Fight For You” is a paean to the struggle and the love that propels it. This new music video forges a portrait of the early champions for Black Empowerment—the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense—and the Chairman of the Illinois chapter, Fred Hampton. H.E.R.’s retro-cool R&B pulsates under period images and messaging from the Panthers, along with scenes from the award-winning 2021 film JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH, resulting in “a hopeful song that represented that time, but is also relevant to now—it’s about a movement, fighting for something that you love.”
