What Will the Oscar-Nomination Surprises Be?
By now we have a pretty good picture of what the Oscar nominations will be when they’re announced on Monday. This week alone the Golden Globes gave a major boost to 1917’s best-picture chances; the Directors Guild highlighted Taika Waititi and Jojo Rabbit as major contenders; the Writers Guild proved nobody can resist Parasite; and the Producers Guild acknowledged the enduring appeal of Joker and Ford v Ferrari.
Then again, at this point last year, we were certain that Timothée Chalametand Ethan Hawke would be Oscar nominees and that Sam Rockwell and Willem Dafoe wouldn’t be—so no matter how many precursors tell us that the Oscar race is all sewn up, every single year brings a surprise or two on nomination morning. On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, Mike Hogan, Richard Lawson, Katey Rich, and Joanna Robinson regroup for the first time since the holidays to discuss the busy week of awards news, including the Golden Globes—which Mike saw in person!—the controversial slate of BAFTA nominees, and the sense that 1917 and Rocketman might be surging…or then again, maybe not.
Listen to the episode here, and check back on Monday morning for an immediate post-nominations episode, where the entire crew is bound to be surprised by at least one contender. That’s the thing about awards season: We all know what’s going to happen—until we suddenly, totally don’t.
