VIDEO: On a freezing January night, Bailey Henke, 18, died in yet another tragic case of opioid overdose in America. Authorities later traced the pill swallowed by the Grand Forks, North Dakota native to a fentanyl factory in China — one of the world’s top sources of the drug. VOA travels to America’s Heartland to see how Bailey’s family, friends and community are grappling with the deadly fallout from the Chinese drug supply chain.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On March 29, 1973, the United States withdraws from Vietnam in accordance with a peace agreement signed two months earlier. The last US combat troops leave South Vietnam and Hanoi frees any remaining American prisoners of war, officially bringing US direct involvement in the 8-year Vietnam War to an end. (In this March 29, 1973 photo, US soldiers prepare to leave Camp Alpha, Uncle Sam’s out-processing center, in Saigon.)
VIDEO: Muslims joined Jews for Passover festivities at a New York mosque. The two faiths have a long history of celebrating together — going back to the Prophet Muhammad — and also share many of the same traditions. For attendees, the event was a learning experience they won’t forget.
Get ready for the ‘Voice of China.’ A proposed merger of the country’s three top broadcasters has been approved in Beijing. The move puts all types of media, including movies, TV programs and books, firmly under the thumb of the communist party’s propaganda department. VOA reports from Beijing, where the consolidation reflects the huge ambitions of China’s powerful leader Xi Jinping and his determination to advance his ‘Chinese Dream’ of restoring China to its past greatness.
More Americans are moving to Texas. The Lone Star state continues to be the nation’s fastest growing state, according to the US Census Bureau, with the Dallas area attracting the most people both internationally and domestically. Here are the most likely reasons why people are relocating to Texas.
Hispanic civil rights leader Cesar Chavez became a symbol of Latino empowermentas he worked to improve wages and working conditions for impoverished farmworkers, many of them immigrants. Cesar Chavez Day is a state holiday in California, which produces half of the vegetables, fruit and nuts grown in the United States Day. An advocate of nonviolence, the international icon remains an inspiration, but his mixed record on undocumented workers complicates his legacy.
Botswana is a rarity in Africa. It has a record of free and fair elections since independence, as well as a reputation for low levels of corruption. President Ian Khama, who has urged long-time African leaders to loosen their grip on power, is stepping down. His voluntary departure is a bright spot in a region where other leaders have gone to great lengths to stay in power, but detractors say the outgoing president also has an authoritarian streak.
VIDEO: The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right listed in the US Declaration of Independence. That could be why a course on how to be happier is one of the most popular classes at prestigious Yale University in the US state of Connecticut, and why many more are enrolled in the Yale happiness course online.
