ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On March 28, 1979, the worst US nuclear power accident in history occurs at Three Mile Island when a pressure valve in a reactor fails to close. Safety devices are in place to prevent the development of a larger crisis, but human workers misread confusing and contradictory readings and shut off the emergency water system. Cooling, radiation-contaminated water drains into adjoining buildings, and the core begins to dangerously overheat. The temperature rises to just 1,000 degrees short of meltdown. (In this photo taken on March 30, 1979, a cooling tower at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania looms behind an abandoned playground.) |
