1496: Ο Λεονάρντο ντα Βίντσι δοκιμάζει ανεπιτυχώς να πετάξει με ιπτάμενη μηχανή.

1887: Οι οπαδοί του Χαρίλαου Τρικούπη πραγματοποιούν την πρώτη σημαντική προεκλογική συγκέντρωση στην ιστορία της Πλατείας Συντάγματος. Περισσότερα από 10.000 άτομα επευφημούν στην πλατεία τον αρχηγό τους.
1899: Χρησιμοποιείται για πρώτη φορά η λέξη «αυτοκίνητο» (automobile), στο κύριο άρθρο της εφημερίδας New York Times.

Ο Γιουσού Ν' Ντουρ, ο διασημότερος Σενεγαλέζος τραγουδιστής, ανακοίνωσε ότι θα είναι υποψήφιος για τις προεδρικές εκλογές του Φεβρουαρίου στη χώρα.



Ο 52χρονος μουσικός, που έγινε παγκοσμίως γνωστός μετά και από τη συνεργασία του με τον Πήτερ Γκάμπριελ, αλλά και την υποστήριξή του στον Νέλσον Μαντέλα, δήλωσε πως άκουσε την επιθυμία των συμπατριωτών να θέσει υποψηφιότητα και θεώρησε «πατριωτικό καθήκον» να διεκδικήσει την

προεδρεία της Σενεγάλης, αξίωμα το οποίο τώρα κατέχει ο Αμπντουλαγιέ Ουαντέ.



«Είναι αλήθεια ότι δεν έχω ανώτερη εκπαίδευση, αλλά η προεδρία είναι λειτουργία και όχι δουλειά» είπε, τονίζοντας ότι έχει αποδείξει την ικανότητά του, τη δέσμευσή του και την αποτελεσματικότητά του πολλές φορές.



«Σπούδασα στο σχολείο του κόσμου. Τα ταξίδια διδάσκουν όσο και τα βιβλία» είπε.

ΑΡΡΑΒΩΝΙΑΣΤΗΚΕ Η ΑΡΙΘΑ ΦΡΑΝΚΛΙΝ

Η Αρίθα Φράνκλιν αρραβωνιάστηκε τον φίλο της Ουίλιαμ «Ουίλι» Ουίλκερσον. Η 69χρονη τραγουδίστρια-θρύλος της σόουλ δήλωσε ότι ευελπιστεί να παντρευτεί μέσα στο καλοκαίρι.



Η Αρίθα Φράνκλιν έχει παντρευτεί στο παρελθόν, άλλες δύο φορές.



«Κοιτάμε να παντρευτούμε τον Ιούνιο ή τον Ιούλιο και όχι, δεν είμαι έγκυος» ανέφερε γελώντας.



Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2010, τα αμερικανικά μέσα ενημέρωσης «διέγνωσαν» ότι η τραγουδίστρια πάσχει από καρκίνο στο πάγκρεας.

3,5 ΔΙΣ.ΓΙΑ ΝΑ ΟΛΟΚΛΗΡΩΘΕΙ ΤΟ ΜΕΤΡΟ

Στα 3,5 δισ. ευρώ φτάνει σε σημερινές τιμές το κόστος υλοποίησης των 33 χλμ του Μετρό Θεσσαλονίκης, το οποίο αφορά στο σύνολο του δικτύου, καλύπτοντας όλο το πολεοδομικό συγκρότημα.




Όπως ανακοίνωσε χθες από τη Θεσσαλονίκη ο υφυπουργός Υποδομών Γ. Μαγκριώτης, περατώνεται αυτές τις ημέρες ο σχεδιασμός όλων των γραμμών, που περιλαμβάνουν το βασικό «κορμό» των 9,6 χλμ., μία επέκταση προς ανατολικά, δύο προς δυτικά, μία από την περιοχή των πανεπιστημίων προς την Τούμπα και τη σύνδεση με το αεροδρόμιο «Μακεδονία».



Από το σύνολο του προϋπολογισμού, 1,7 δισ. ευρώ, το οποίο αφορά στη βασική γραμμή και στην επέκταση προς Καλαμαριά είναι διασφαλισμένο από κοινοτικούς πόρους και από την Ευρωπαϊκή Τράπεζα Επενδύσεων. Οι υπόλοιποι πόροι θα επιδιωχθεί να εξευρεθούν, μέσω της ένταξης των επεκτάσεων στο 5ο ΚΠΣ, που ξεκινά το 2013.



Μέτωπα

Ειδικότερα, ο κ. Μαγκριώτης επισήμανε πως το 2011 «αναπτύχθηκαν όλα τα μέτωπα του έργου και απομένει το Παπάφειο και κάποιες απαλλοτριώσεις σε ορισμένους επόμενους σταθμούς, οι οποίες καθυστέρησαν εξαιτίας αλλαγών στη χάραξη, λόγω ρεμάτων και σεισμικών ρηγμάτων».



«Το 2012 θα είναι χρονιά ακόμη μεγαλύτερης επιτάχυνσης για το βασικό έργο, δηλαδή τη γραμμή των 9,6 χλμ. Επιπλέον θα δημοπρατηθεί και θα αρχίσουν οι εργασίες της γραμμής προς την Καλαμαριά με κόστος 620 εκατ. ευρώ.



Επίσης θα προκηρυχθούν φέτος οι οριστικές μελέτες για την πρώτη επέκταση προς τα δυτικά από την πλατεία Δημοκρατίας και την οδό Λαγκαδά μέχρι την περιοχή της Ευκαρπίας και τα νοσοκομεία», τόνισε ο ίδιος και πρόσθεσε πως «μέχρι το 2015 θα ολοκληρωθεί η πρώτη γραμμή και θα τεθεί σε λειτουργία το 2016 και η γραμμή της Καλαμαριάς. Πιστεύω ότι επειδή δεν θα έχουμε τόσα αρχαιολογικά προβλήματα, κοντά στο 2016-17 θα λειτουργήσει η πρώτη επέκταση προς τα δυτικά».



Επέκταση δυτικά

Το δίκτυο της δυτικής Θεσσαλονίκης περιλαμβάνει και δεύτερη γραμμή από τους Αμπελόκηπους προς τη Μενεμένη, Ελευθέριο Κορδελιό μέχρι και τον Εύοσμο.



Απαντώντας σε ερώτηση για το ζήτημα του σταθμού στο Παπάφειο, ο υφυπουργός δήλωσε ότι υπήρξε μία άτυπη συνάντηση με το Μητροπολίτη Θεσσαλονίκης, έχουν διευθετηθεί ορισμένα νομικά ζητήματα και η συμφωνία αναμένεται ότι θα κλείσει εντός του μήνα. Παράλληλα το επόμενο χρονικό διάστημα θα ξεκινήσει η καταβολή αποζημιώσεων (με τη μορφή ρυθμίσεων οφειλών τους προς ασφαλιστικά ταμεία κ.ά.) στους καταστηματάρχες, οι οποίοι από το 2007 έχουν υποστεί απώλειες από την κατασκευή του έργου.



Τέλος εγκρίθηκε από το Ελεγκτικό Συνέδριο πρόσθετη χρηματοδότηση 41,8 εκατ. ευρώ για τις απαραίτητες αρχαιολογικές εργασίες του μετρό, ενώ ακόμη αποφεύχθηκε η πραγματοποίηση απολύσεων εργατών, μέσω της εσωτερικής μετακίνησής τους σε άλλα σημεία του έργου.

Πέθανε ο σαξοφωνίστας Jim Sherwood

Ο Jim Sherwood, ο σαξοφωνίστας και ιδρυτικό μέλος των Mothers of Invention του Frank Zappa, πέθανε σε ηλικία 69 ετών ανήμερα των Χριστουγέννων, ωστόσο τα αίτια του θανάτου του δεν έχουν ακόμα διευκρινιστεί.
Η μουσική του Sherwood ακουγόταν στους αρχικούς δίσκους των Mothers αλλά από το 1968 άρχισε να συμμετέχει full -time στα άλμπουμ του διάσημου συγκροτήματος. Ο Jim Sherwood γνωρίστηκε με τον Frank Zappa τη δεκαετία του ’50 και από τότε έπαιξαν μαζί σε διάφορα συγκροτήματα πριν δημιουργηθούν οι Mothers of Invention.
Μετά τη διάλυση του ψυχεδελικού συγκροτήματος, ο Jim συμμετείχε στο solo album του Zappa «Lumpy Gravy» και περιοδικά συνεργάζονταν μέχρι το θάνατο του ιδρυτή των Mothers το 1993.

When her doctor dad ignores his family for his career and her mother receives amorous attention from a neighbor, poor Shirley Temple runs away from home in an attempt to bring her parents back together in this early soaper.



This film is not a musical at all, but it is a rather unusual film for Shirley Temple. Sources indicate the song "Out Little Girl" is used in the film, but there is no complete treatment of the song, only a few short excerpts. I've included this film for completeness of Shirley Temple films.

1997, Guitarist Randy California from US group Spirit drowned when rescuing his 12-year old son when he was sucked into a riptide in surf off Hawaii.



1999, Chef went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with Chocolate Salty Balls (PS I Love You). Chef appeared in the cult TV series South Park, the voice was that of Isaac Hayes (who had a hit with Shaft in 1971).



2000, Travis started a six-week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with 'The Man Who.'





2002, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter was arrested in a Tampa, Florida night-club after being involved in a fight. Police said that Carter was arguing with a woman and when they asked him to leave, he continued arguing. He was arrested on a misdemeanour count of resisting a law enforcement officer without violence.





2003, 50 Cent was arrested by police in New York after guns were found in his vehicle, after his SUV was searched when it had been left in a no-parking zone. Police found a .25-calibre handgun and a .45-calibre pistol in the vehicle, officers said both guns were loaded.





2004, Daniel Bedingfield suffered two fractured vertebrae in his neck after the jeep he was driving rolled over and crashed when on holiday in New Zealand. Emergency workers had to cut the singer free before he could be taken to hospital.





2005, Winner of TV talent show, X-Factor Steve Brookstein went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of the 1984 Phil Collins song 'Against All Odds'.





2005, Green Day were at No.1 on the UK album chart with their seventh album 'American Idiot.' The album went on to be nominated for seven Grammy Awards, winning the Best Rock Album of 2005.





2007, Kylie Minogue played the first of two nights at Wembley Arena in London during her re-scheduled Showgirl world tour. The tour was postponed last year after Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer, for which the singer had since received treatment.





2007, Cristin Keleher who once broke into former Beatle George Harrison's Hawaii home was found dead after an apparent murder-suicide in California, aged 34. She made headlines in December 1999 by entering Harrison's Maui estate and then cooking herself a frozen pizza. Police said her body had been found with that of a 48-year-old man in a car, both had gunshot wounds to their heads.



2007, Gnarls Barkley's song 'Crazy' was confirmed as the biggest selling UK single of 2006 selling over 700,000 copies. The track, which was the first to reach number one on downloads alone, held off the challenge of X-factor winner Leone. Snow Patrol's album 'Eyes Open' topped the album chart with estimated sales of 1.5m while Take That's comeback release 'Beautiful World' came in just behind. Singles sales had doubled to over 65m since the download chart was launched in September 2004.



2008, Josh Groban was America's top selling artist of 2007, the 26-year-old whose hits included ‘You Raise Me Up’, had the best-selling album of the year with the Christmas compilation Noel, which sold close to 3.7m copies. The second biggest seller was the soundtrack for Disney's High School Musical 2. The Eagles were 2007's biggest selling group with sales of 3.58m albums.



2009, According to official US sales figures AC/DC were the biggest sellers of 2008 with over 3.4m sales. To promote the group’s latest album Black Ice, Columbia Records created "Rock Again AC/DC Stores" as well as "Black Ice" trucks which were dispatched on the streets of New York and Los Angeles playing AC/DC music aloud and making various stops each day to sell merchandise.

Ένα βίντεο παρωδία μίας γερμανικής ταινίας του 1963, του "Γεύματος για έναν" (Der 90. Geburtstag ή Dinner for one), στην οποία πρωταγωνιστεί η γερμανίδα καγκελάριος Άγγελα Μέρκελ ως Μις Ντέιζι και ο γάλλος πρόεδρος Νικολά Σαρκοζί στο ρόλο του μπάτλερ, έχει γίνει μεγάλη επιτυχία στο διαδίκτυο.





Στην αυθεντική ταινία μία ηλικιωμένη γυναίκα, η Μις Ντέιζι, θέλει να γιορτάσει τα 90α της γενέθλια με τέσσερις φίλους της, οι οποίοι όμως έχουν πεθάνει κι έτσι ο μπάτλερ της αναγκάζεται να παίξει το ρόλο των τεσσάρων καλεσμένων.



Στο βίντεο παρωδία το οποίο δημιούργησε το γερμανικό τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο ARD και έχει τίτλο "Η 90η σύνοδος διάσωσης του ευρώ ή ευρώ για έναν", τα κεφάλια του Σαρκοζί και της Μέρκελ έχουν τοποθετηθεί στο σώμα των πραγματικών ηθοποιών.



Φανταστικοί καλεσμένοι της Μέρκελ-Μις Ντέζι είναι ο έλληνας πρώην πρωθυπουργός Γιώργος Παπανδρέου, ο ισπανός πρώην πρωθυπουργός Χοσέ Λουίς Ροντρίγκες Θαπατέρο και ο βρετανός πρωθυπουργός Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον.



Ο Σαρκοζί προσποιείται ότι είναι ο Κάμερον, ενώ η Μέρκελ κάνει πρόποση και του λέει: "Μην ξεχνάς, στην Ευρώπη μιλάμε γερμανικά".



"Φαίνεσαι νεότερη από ποτέ", της απαντά ο Κάμερον στα αγγλικά και στη συνέχεια της λέει στα γερμανικά: "Φαίνεσαι πιο πλούσια από ποτέ".



Καθώς ο Σαρκοζί στο ρόλο του μπάτλερ τριγυρνά γύρω από το στρωμένο τραπέζι ο αφηγητής επισημαίνει: "Αυτό συμβαίνει σε κάθε σύνοδο για τη διάσωση του ευρώ, ανεξάρτητα από το αν υπάρχουν άλλοι παρόντες, αυτοί οι δύο κάνουν τα πάντα μόνοι τους".

2011-ΟΙ ΕΠΙΣΤΗΜΟΝΙΚΕΣ ΑΝΑΚΑΛΥΨΕΙΣ

Τις σημαντικότερες επιστημονικές ανακαλύψεις στον κόσμο για το 2011 παρουσίασε το περιοδικό «Science» και τις οποίες αναμεταδίδει το ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ. Πιο σπουδαία από αυτές κρίνει μια διεθνή κλινική δοκιμή που έδειξε ότι τα φάρμακα κατά του AIDS μπορούν να είναι το ίδιο αποτελεσματικά με τα προφυλακτικά στην παρεμπόδιση της διάδοσης του ιού HIV.



Η ανακάλυψη χαρακτηρίστηκε ορόσημο προόδου στην 30χρονη μάχη κατά της θανατηφόρου νόσου, η οποία έχει μολύνει περίπου 33 εκατ. ανθρώπους διεθνώς και σκότωσε 1,8 εκατ. το 2009.

Την επιλογή των δέκα σημαντικότερων επιτευγμάτων κάνει ο κυριότερος επιστημονικός φορέας των ΗΠΑ, η Αμερικανική Ένωση για την Προώθηση της Επιστήμης (AAAS), η οποία εκδίδει και το «Science».



Η έρευνα για το AIDS, που άρχισε το 2007 και αφορούσε 1.763 ετεροφυλόφιλα ζευγάρια, στα οποία ο ένας σύντροφος είχε τον ιό και ο άλλος όχι, έδειξε ότι οι ασθενείς που έγκαιρα λαμβάνουν αντι-ιικά φάρμακα, μειώνουν τον κίνδυνο ετεροφυλόφιλης μετάδοσης του ιού κατά 96%.



Εδώ και χρόνια, οι επιστήμονες είχαν προτείνει ότι τα αντι-ιικά φάρμακα κατά του HIV, που δίνονται σε ασθενείς με AIDS, θα μπορούσαν επίσης να μειώσουν σημαντικά τον κίνδυνο μετάδοσης της νόσου σε σεξουαλικούς συντρόφους που δεν είναι φορείς του ιού. Η νέα έρευνα (με την κωδική ονομασία ΗΡΤΝ 052) αποδείχνει ακριβώς αυτό, ανοίγοντας νέες στρατηγικές πρόληψης.



Τα άλλα εννέα επιτεύγματα του έτους, τα οποία συμπληρώνουν την πρώτη δεκάδα είναι τα εξής:



- Το κατόρθωμα του ιαπωνικού διαστημικού σκάφους «Χαγιαμπούσα», το οποίο ξεπέρασε τις σοβαρές τεχνικές δυσκολίες που του παρουσιάστηκαν και κατάφερε, έστω και με τρία χρόνια καθυστέρηση, να φέρει πίσω στη Γη δείγμα από την επιφάνεια του αστεροειδούς «Ιτοκάβα». Η σχετική ανάλυση έδειξε, μεταξύ άλλων, ότι ο ηλιακός «άνεμος» αποχρωματίζει τους αστεροειδείς, καθώς επίσης ότι οι πιο κοινοί μετεωρίτες που ανευρίσκονται στον πλανήτη μας (οι χονδρίτες), προέρχονται από τέτοιους μεγαλύτερους αστεροειδείς όπως ο «Ιτοκάβα».



- Μετά από μελέτες το 2010 που είχαν δείξει ότι οι Ευρωπαίοι και οι Ασιάτες έχουν κληρονομήσει το 2% έως 6% του DNA τους από τους Νεάντερταλ μετά προφανώς από επιμιξίες, νέες αναλύσεις φέτος έδειξαν ότι η επιμιξία με τους ανθρώπους των σπηλαίων ενίσχυσε το ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα των σύγχρονων ανθρώπων, ενώ προέκυψαν νέα στοιχεία στη Ν.Αφρική ότι ο ικανός στην κατασκευή εργαλείων Αυστραλόπιθηκος sediba είναι ο άμεσος πρόγονός μας.



- Ιάπωνες ερευνητές απεικόνισαν για πρώτη φορά τη δομή του «Φωτοσυστήματος 2», μιας φωτοσυνθετικής πρωτεΐνης που χρησιμοποιούν τα φυτά για να διασπάσουν το νερό σε άτομα υδρογόνου και οξυγόνου. Η ανακάλυψη μπορεί μελλοντικά να διευκολύνει την παραγωγή «καθαρής» ενέργειας.



- Οι αστρονόμοι, χρησιμοποιώντας το τηλεσκόπιο Κεκ της Χαβάης, εντόπισαν δύο «παρθένα» νέφη αερίου υδρογόνου, τα οποία φαίνεται να έχουν την ίδια αρχική χημική σύνθεση με αυτήν που εκτιμάται ότι υπήρχε κατά τα πρώτα χρόνια μετά το αρχικό «Μπιγκ Μπανγκ» της δημιουργίας. Μια άλλη ομάδα ανακάλυψε ένα άστρο χωρίς σχεδόν καθόλου μέταλλα, όπως ήσαν τα πρώτα άστρα στο σύμπαν, πράγμα που δείχνει ότι πιθανότατα, παρά την βίαιη φύση του σύμπαντος, διατηρούνται στο «βαθύ» διάστημα αρχέγονες «νησίδες» που έχουν διατηρήσει την πρωτογενή σύστασή τους.



- Οι επιστήμονες έριξαν νέο φως στις ευμεγέθεις μικροβιακές κοινότητες που ζουν στο ανθρώπινο σώμα και συμβιώνουν μαζί μας (το λεγόμενο «μικροβίωμα»). Η έρευνα, μεταξύ άλλων, έδειξε ότι ο κάθε άνθρωπος έχει μια «δική του» κυρίαρχη κατηγορία βακτηρίων στο έντερό του, από τα οποία άλλα προτιμούν το κρέας και τις πρωτεΐνες και άλλα είναι φυτοφάγα.



- Η προσπάθεια δημιουργίας του πρώτου αποτελεσματικού εμβολίου για την ελονοσία σημείωσε σημαντική πρόοδο μετά τη δημοσιοποίηση των πρώτων αποτελεσμάτων μιας μεγάλης κλινικής δοκιμής που έδειξε ότι μειώνει στο μισό περίπου τον κίνδυνο μόλυνσης.



- Πολλές ήσαν το 2011 οι ανακαλύψεις νέων παράξενων εξωπλανητών, κυρίως χάρη στο διαστημικό τηλεσκόπιο «Κέπλερ» της NASA. Ξεχώρισαν μία ομάδα έξι μεγάλων πλανητών σε τροχιά γύρω από το άστρο Κέπλερ-11, σε απόσταση περίπου 2.000 ετών φωτός από τη Γη, καθώς επίσης ο εντοπισμός δέκα «ορφανών» πλανητών που δεν φαίνεται να περιφέρονται γύρω από κανένα «μητρικό» άστρο, ενός πλανήτη που έχει δύο ήλιους και ενός άλλου που περιφέρεται με αντίστροφη φορά από τη φορά του άστρου του.



- Η ανακάλυψη από χημικούς νέων συνθετικών πορωδών ορυκτών, των ζεολίθων, οι οποίοι μπορούν να έχουν σωρεία πρακτικών εφαρμογών, όπως νέου τύπου απορρυπαντικά για τα πλυντήρια και νέες διαδικασίες καθαρισμού στη βιομηχανία (πετρελαίου, αερίου κ.α.).Οι νέοι ζεόλιθοι είναι φθηνότεροι, πιο λεπτοί και πιο κατάλληλοι για την επεξεργασία και κάθαρση μεγάλων οργανικών μορίων.



- Στον τομέα της βιολογίας, ξεχώρισε η ανακάλυψη ότι η απομάκρυνση των παλαιών κυττάρων (που έχουν πάψει πια να διαιρούνται) μπορεί να επιβραδύνει τα συμπτώματα της γήρανσης. Τα σχετικά πειράματα με ποντίκια έδειξαν ότι ο «καθαρισμός» του οργανισμού από τα γερασμένα κύτταρα μπορεί να καθυστερήσει την εμφάνιση καταρράκτη ή μυϊκής αδυναμίας. Η διάρκεια ζωής των πειραματόζωων δεν επιμηκύνθηκε, αλλά η ποιότητα ζωής τους βελτιώθηκε.

Will West End leap Olympic hurdle?

The Olympics will cause "a bloodbath of a summer" for London theatres in 2012, Andrew Lloyd Webber has predicted.



"Nobody's going to go to the theatre at all," the composer told Radio 4's Today programme, predicting that "most of the theatres in London will shut".



"It's going to be very tough," he said, revealing advance bookings were "about 10%" of their normal level.



Three major musicals, he added, "are not going to play over the Olympics" - but he would not name them.



Lord Lloyd-Webber's Really Useful Group owns seven London theatres which are currently hosting shows including War Horse, Matilda and The Wizard of Oz.



The impresario said "big, big, big hits" like his own The Phantom of the Opera would continue during the Olympics period.



But he said some of his other theatres "will have to" close because of a drop-off in the "ordinary West End tourist audience".



On a brighter note, the 63-year-old said a host of new musicals would arrive in the West End after the conclusion of the 2012 games.



Shows heading into London include a Spice Girls musical, a Bridget Jones stage show and the Tony award-winning The Book of Mormon.



"They've never been so commercially popular," he told BBC arts correspondent Rebecca Jones. "The appetite for musicals is insatiable in a way.



"I don't think I've ever had so many musicals being offered to our theatres in London as there are for the end of next year."



The capital's promotional organisation London and Partners added that 29 shows would be running next summer, with an "unprecedented" number booking through to the autumn.



A spokeswoman said that a whole series of experiences would be on offer next year, including London's "world-beating theatre".

1967, The Doors made their first live television appearance lip-synching their first single ‘Break on Through’ on Shebang, KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles. The single peaked No. 126 on the US chart mainly due to lack of airplay after censors objected to the drug use implied by the line "she gets high", which is repeated in the middle section of the song.



1968, Billboard magazine reported that for the first time albums had outsold singles in the US with album sales reaching over 192 million units.



1969, Marmalade were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of The Beatles song 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da'.

2008, The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reported that the number of music downloads sold in the UK in the final week of 2007 was double the total of 12 months earlier. In total there were 2.95 million downloads in seven days, the highest ever recorded for any weekly period. And when the whole of the year was taken into account, 77.5 million downloads were sold in the UK in 2007.



2009, According to official UK sales figures Duffy’s debut album Rockferry came top of the year-end chart, with 1.685 million copies sold. Take That had the second biggest seller with The Circus, Kings of Leon, Only By The Night was third, Spirit by Leona Lewis was fourth and Coldplay had the fifth biggest seller with Viva La Vida. X Factor winner Alexandra Burke had the UK's top-selling single after her version of Hallelujah sold 888,000 copies in the last two weeks of the year.



2011, Chuck Berry cut short a concert at Congress Theater, Chicago, Illinois after collapsing on stage an hour into the show. Berry slumped over a keyboard and did not move for a couple of minutes before being helped off stage, he returned 15 minutes later only to be forced off again almost immediately. The 84 year-old later re-emerged on stage but told fans he had no strength to continue performing.

1945, Born on this day, Jim Gordon, American drummer, one of the most requested session drummers in the late 1960s and 1970s. Gordon co-wrote Layla with Eric Clapton, worked with The Everly Brothers, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, (Pet Sounds) The Byrds, George Harrison, (All Things Must Pass), John Lennon, (Imagine), The Carpenters, Traffic, Glen Campbell, (Wichita Lineman), Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Frank Zappa and many others. A diagnosed schizophrenic, Gordon murdered his mother on June 3, 1983, by pounding her head with a hammer. He was sentenced to sixteen years-to-life in prison in 1984.
