The Emmys officially have a new date in January, just as final voting for the winners is set to begin. No one is surprised by the shift, many are relieved to finally have some clarity—that is, assuming the strikes are resolved with enough time beforehand—and a few are already stressing about a stacked calendar in the New Year that now has to make room for a genuine interruption to the height of Oscar season. Thought we had too many awards shows before this? The frenzy just got that much worse.
Though speaking of Oscar season—at the risk of hitting the panic button for those deep into fall-festival planning and strategy, we’re kind of already off to the races. I’m David Canfield, and while the industry is all but shut down with picket lines still robust and press still off-limits for most actors, the fact remains we’ve got a very strong slate of highly anticipated movies less than a month away from premiering. Studio sources I’ve spoken with over the last few weeks are proceeding as business as usual as possible, with potential contenders they’re excited about primed for a careful, coordinated rollout. A few more release dates may push the longer this drags on, but for the most part, we’ve got a pretty good picture of the fall to come.
Over the next few weeks, my colleague Rebecca Ford and I will have first looks at some films and performances we’re especially excited about, and that are gearing up to make a big splash. On Tuesday, though, I was happy to kick things offwith a deep dive into Fair Play, the scintillating debut feature from Chloe Domont that Netflix acquired in a major acquisition out of its blazing Sundance premiere. The thriller starring a never-better Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich will get back on the circuit in Toronto, its next big stop, before getting a theatrical release at the end of September. (It’ll hit Netflix a few weeks later.) From the hand-built sets to the complex set of dynamics set up by Domont—to say nothing of the sheer entertainment factor—it’s an indie vision that ought to find its way into a crowded conversation this year.
We’re also, of course, speaking with Emmy nominees before that side of the equation goes quiet for several months. (Voting wraps at the end of August, meaning we’ll be entering a four-month quiet zone before the winners are announced.) We’re revisiting some of the most celebrated episodes of this year’s nominations, including The Last of Us’s “Infected,” and the work especially worth highlighting. Among the talent featured in Awards Insider this week is a certified TV legend, director Paris Barclay, on his ninth nomination for helming the standout episode of Dahmer—but, as showcased in our first installment of this season’s Highlight Reel series, it’s really the culmination of several remarkable decades of success in the medium. He’s got some stories to tell, just how we like it here.
