The Next Oscar Race Has Already Begun (Yes, Really)
The 2022 Oscars are still not quite behind us—the Academy’s board of governors met today and decided to ban Will Smithfrom Academy events for the next 10 years following his infamous Oscar-night slap—but pretty much everyone in awards land is ready to turn the page. And what better way to do that than by looking way ahead to next year’s Oscars?
I’m Katey Rich, filling in for my colleagues David Canfieldand Rebecca Ford while they take much-earned post-Oscars vacations. But before they took off, we all had the pleasure of joining Richard Lawson and frequent guest Joe Reid for our 2023 Oscar-predictions episode of the Little Gold Menpodcast. Don’t worry, we take the “predictions” part pretty lightly—the annual tradition is for everyone to take a flier and predict the next year’s best-picture winner, and nobody has ever actually gotten it right. But looking over a list of films we suspect will come out this year is an undeniable thrill, a whole blank slate of promising titles and powerful auteurs that, at this point in the year, could all turn out to be great.
Without spoiling the episode too much, we dive into the prospects for a lot of films by Oscar darlings, including Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Steven Spielberg(The Fabelmans), and Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin, a title that could absolutely only come from Martin McDonagh). There’s also intriguing work on the horizon from everyone from James Gray to Sarah Polley to Jordan Peele, the first film in 16 years from Little Children auteur Todd Field,Black Panther 2…truly, we could go on forever, but the episode somehow clocks in under 90 minutes anyway.
But if the anticipation is too much, there’s plenty of great stuff to dive into right this moment on television, where Emmy season is just starting to heat up. This week Hulu’s The Dropout wrapped its season, and David Canfield pops in from his vacation to explain why star Amanda Seyfried is a strong front-runner in what’s become one of the most competitive Emmy fields, best actress in a limited series. She’ll be up against formidable competition, including from her Les Misérables costar Anne Hathaway for WeCrashed and Emmy-winner Julia Garner for Inventing Anna (yes, it really is the season of scammers). But as David writes, The Dropoutleaped to the head of that pack with its depiction of Elizabeth Holmes and the fall of Theranos “by operating in a delicate kind of tragicomic mode, and fleshing its world out with a compelling supporting cast. Seyfried ably led the way.”
The Emmy Awards announced this year’s date just this week, and yes, Monday, September 12, remains a full five months away. But if you’re going to catch up on all the excellent stuff in competition this year, you’ve got to start now.
