Two years ago after a mass of Hollywood writers fired their agents over alleged conflicts of interest, the nearly unthinkable has happened: The agencies have backed down, ending a long and extremely profitable standard policy of “packaging” projects. Joy Press talks to WGA West executive director David Young, who isn’t troubled by talk that he ran a scorched-earth campaign. “If the earth was scorched in this case, it’s because the agencies forced us,” he says. “Theywould not listen. Elsewhere in HWD, V.F. excerpts a new book about the making of the pivotal best-picture winner Midnight Cowboy;David Ansen points you toward the most groundbreaking documentaries of the awards season; our chief critic, Richard Lawson, writes about The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and our Little Gold Men team talks to Another Round star Mads Mikkelsen.
