The COVID-Era Oscars
Believe it or not, there’s a way in which the pandemic-battered 2021 Oscars may wind up being a singularly spectacular show—or at least one with particularly notable nominees and winners. “We’re not gathering together. We’re not breaking bread together. We’re not drinking together,” Academy member Cassandra Butcher told Anthony Breznican in the latest issue of V.F. “Now we’re in our homes voting the way we want to really vote. The Academy could be everywhere this year, all over the place.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Tracy Moore surveys the lovable insanity of The Drew Barrymore Show; Katey Rich takes us through a new exhibition of celebrity photographer Helmut Newton’s work; Richard Lawson reviews the chilling new horror film His House; and Christopher Rosen catches us up on the industry’s latest digs against its favorite punching bag, Quibi.
