On February 20, 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the United States, opens in New York City. The museum has a permanent collection of over 2 million works, covering classical art, works of European masters as well as extensive holdings of Asian, African and Islamic art. Additionally, the “Met” has collections of musical instruments, costumes, weapons and armor. Today, the Met is the fifth most visited museum in the world. |
