Inside the American Love Island
Never taken a trip to Love Island, the addictive British reality dating competition that took American viewers by storm last summer (after coming to stream on Hulu)? Let Yohana Desta explain why you may want to reconsider that: Simply put, this series is “reality TV catnip. The contestants are all gorgeous to look at, of course, and the show’s general ethos—its drama is mostly centered on their blossoming relationships—is much more relaxed than the extreme thrills of American dating shows like The Bachelor or even VH1’s late aughts Flavor of Love spin-offs. There is a sweetness to Love Island: Contestants mostly laze around in the sun and talk about their feelings. Screaming matches are few and far between. Everyone drinks, but they rarely appear drunk.” Next week, CBS will attempt to recapture that magic via an official American version of the series. How will they translate the show’s particularly British charms for Stateside audiences? Desta spoke to an exec and the new version’s host to find out.
Elsewhere in HWD, Joanna Robinson explains a delightful but potentially puzzling Spider-Man: Far From Home cameo; Laura Bradley reads some tea leaves to try to figure out who will be the next Bachelor; the Film Academy bumps up the diversity of its membership, slightly; and contributor DJ Louie XIV considers the future of pop music through nine very 2019 songs.
