Inside Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood
A sleepy, sequel-rific summer season at the movies gets a big jolt today, as Quentin Tarantino’s latest film—the elegiacally titled Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood—opens in theaters. The film, as if you didn’t already know, focuses on a pair of aging performers fumbling their way through a transitional moment in Tinseltown: Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), a onetime star of Westerns reduced to playing bad guy bit roles on TV, and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), his more easygoing stuntman turned Guy Friday. It’s the sort of movie that seems built to generate Oscar buzz despite opening long before the season officially begins—but as Yohana Desta points out, you may walk away from it talking not about DiCaprio and Pitt, but Julia Butters, the 10-year-old actor who steals every scene in which she appears as one of DiCaprio’s on-set foils. Desta spoke with the pint-size American Housewife star to learn more about her experience making the film—and how it felt when her Oscar-winning scene partner compared her to a young Meryl Streep.Said Butters: “I’m so happy that he did [that]—and so mad that he did at the same time.”
Elsewhere in HWD (and Hollywood), Julia Miller speaks with the late Sharon Tate’s sister about Margot Robbie’s performance as the slain star in Once Upon a Time; the Little Gold Men podcast team handicaps the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, when awards season really begins; Joy Press chats with Jenji Kohan about the final season of Netflix’s Emmy-hoovering dramedy Orange Is the New Black, now streaming; and speaking of which, Sonia Saraiya gives that last season her hearty endorsement.
