Midsommar Is Coming
Take it from us: Midsommar,Ari Aster’s sun- and blood-drenched follow-up to his 2018 horror hit, Hereditary, is going to dominate your cinephiliac friends’ conversations come July Fourth weekend. Prepare for the coming onslaught of discussion by reading Yohana Desta’s breezy interview with the ever-charming William Jackson Harper, who trades The Good Place for a role in the film as an ambitious Ph.D. candidate doing field work on a Swedish cult. (So, yes, he’s playing a variation on Chidi—but don’t you like Chidi?) Harper spoke with Desta about his favorite horror films, preparing to work with Midsommar’s hairiest cast member (“Hey, we’re gonna have a live bear on set. Don’t be a dick. That was basically the long and the short of it. Just act like you have some sense, and do not do anything stupid around the bear”), and how it felt to be one of the few black people in Budapest, where the movie was shot.
Elsewhere in HWD, K. Austin Collins is underwhelmed by Danny Boyle’s Yesterday; Euphoria star Maude Apatow talks about her new HBO series and her famous parents, Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow;Paul Chipreviews the third season of Stranger Things; and Mindy Kaling makes another case for Four Weddings and a Funeral.
