At his long-planned presentation to media in New York on Thursday morning, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys became the unexpected center of attention. Following a report about his efforts to combat bad reviews in 2020 and 2021, Bloys opened his presentation with an apology, according to our own Hillary Busis. He acknowledged that because he is a programming executive who is “very, very passionate about the shows that we decide to do,” he’d come up with a “very, very dumb idea.” Then he went on to reveal all kinds of other news about those shows, from some disappointing updates about strike-related delays for The White Lotus and The Last of Us to the surprise reveal of a second season of The Jinx.
But it’s not all HBO, all the time here in HWD today. David Canfield caught up with Matt Johnson, the director of the fall’s most unlikely TV premiere: an expanded edition to his film BlackBerry, cut into a three-episode limited series and heading to AMC+. Chris Murphy has the news that Taylor Tomlinson will be the youngest host on late-night TV by decades when she takes on CBS’s After Midnight, filling the slot once occupied by James Corden. And Richard Lawsonhas an update to his ongoing list of the best films of 2023, including several awards-season hopefuls playing in theaters now.
