On March 16, 1802, the United States Military Academy is founded. Commonly called West Point, it was established with the purpose of educating and training future U.S. Army officers. Some notable graduates include Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, Buzz Aldrin and current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The first African-American cadet was admitted in 1870, and the first female cadet was admitted in 1976. Today, West Point has an enrollment of over 4,000 cadets. |
