ESSENTIAL INDUSTRY AND AWARD NEWS
MARCH 27, 2020
But What About Awards Season?
Cannes, of course, is postponed. So was the Peabody Awards, and the 2020 Olympic Games, and, and, and. But what about the major events scheduled a bit farther in the future—particularly the glitzy ceremonies where celebrities will gather this fall and winter to applaud as their peers collect new pieces of gold statuary? A few new developments Friday point toward answers. As Yohana Desta notes, both the TV Academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have released new guidelines designed to help both the 2020 Emmys and the 2021 Golden Globes proceed roughly as scheduled, despite the upheaval of the coronavirus pandemic. Both bodies are changing eligibility requirements, in an attempt to adjust for the ways COVID-19 has disrupted the globe—and the Globes, in line with social distancing initiatives, are nixing screening rules that would require groups to gather. The Oscars, by the way, have not yet announced any changes, though the Film Academy has said it continues to monitor an ever-changing situation.
Elsewhere in HWD, Richard Lawson reviews Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn’s Amazon reality competition, which is not not a riff on Project Runway;Meghan Markle signs on for a Disney nature documentary; and Christopher Rosen delivers both a list of what to stream on Netflix next month and recommendations for what to watch instead of Niki Caro’s remake of Mulan, which was originally slated to hit theaters today.
