A Much-Needed Dose of Inspiration
Looking for a new streaming option that might not only take your mind off the pandemic, but also give you a sense of actual well-being? Try Crip Camp. The provocatively named Netflix documentary begins at a summer camp, Camp Jened, that was a haven for teenagers with disabilities from the 1950s through most of the 1970s. Then, as Richard Lawson writes, it broadens its scope, flashing forward to a time “when many of the campers, led by longtime disability-rights advocate and Jened alum Judith Heumann, took the spirit of strength and unity imbued in them at the camp into the broader world.” The effect is a powerful one: “The film is sturdy, galvanizing, the sort of movie that might help rouse people out of despair and into the good fight.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Anthony Breznican talks to Patty Jenkins about Wonder Woman 1984 (a film that, like every other spring tentpole, has been pushed from its original release date due to the coronavirus pandemic); Yohana Desta notes a peculiar consequence of self-isolation: the fact that suddenly, a whole lot of people are watching The Wire;Sarah Morse takes stock of the various celebrities producing quality quarantine content; and Tara Ariano recommends the best sports movies to stream when watching actual live sports is not an option.
