ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On September 14, 1975, Elizabeth Ann Seton becomes the first American-born Catholic saint when she is canonized by Pope Paul VI at the Vatican in Rome. Seton was born in New York City in 1774, and as the daughter of an Episcopalian physician, she devoted much of her time to charity and working with the poor. She founded the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children in New York. While traveling in Italy with her husband, William Seton, she became more familiar with Catholicism. She converted in 1808 after being widowed with five children. |
