Elton John Sings A New "Candle In The Wind" At Princess Diana's Funeral
1997
Elton John sings a new version of "Candle In The Wind" at Princess Diana's funeral. This rendition, which replaces "Goodbye Norma Jean" with "Goodbye England's Rose," becomes the best-selling single of all time.
Diana, Princess of Wales, in line to be the next Queen of England before her divorce from Prince Charles, was one of the biggest celebrities in the world when she lost her life along with her partner Dodi Fayed in a car crash following a paparazzi pursuit through the streets of Paris. Her split from Prince Charles drove a wedge between her and the British royal family, but she remained immensely popular with the pubic and is granted a lavish ceremonial funeral in Westminster Abbey.
Elton John, a longtime friend, is asked to sing at the event - just a month earlier, he and Diana attended the funeral of their mutual friend, the fashion designer Gianni Versace.
John has asked his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to revise the lyrics to his 1973 hit "Candle In The Wind," and when he begins to sing the first line, "Goodbye England's Rose," his voice cracks with emotion.
The song was originally written as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, another icon that passed before her time. This new version strikes a chord with the 2.5 billion who are watching the funeral live on television across the world. When it is released as a single a week later it sells over 600,000 copies on the first day in the UK and quickly becomes the biggest selling single of all time in Britain. With over 30 million copies sold worldwide, it ranks #2 all time to "White Christmas." Proceeds, which are over £38 million, go to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
Elton John refuses to ever play the song again after the funeral, and radio stations cease playing it after four weeks as a mark of respect. He remains close to the royals, and the following year is awarded a knighthood for his charity work.
